Cheap Date - 26 April 2008 - Chef's Fest 2008 & Contest Winners!

This week's show is actually two podcasts in one, kind of like what they used to say on the old Certs commercial.

First, you'll join us for the most recent episode of Discover Woodfield! as we visit the 15th Annual Original Chef's Fest at the Arlington International Racecourse. This is our Third Annual visit to the Fest, and once again our pals Liz and Bob accompany us along with Becka and Emma. Lots of food and fun, as well as some sweet Barbershop singing from The Arlingtones.

Then we announce the winners of our "Favorite Cheap Date" contest and read some of the entries. We had tons of responses, so thank you all for participating!

Lisa is feeling under the weather this week, so Joe is your cruise director for this episode. Or maybe he's more like Gopher, your yeoman purser. :-) At least there are no Kermodian rants this time around.

"Keep The Whole World Singing" and "Stout-Hearted Man" are performed by The Arlingtones, who provided live entertainment during Chef's Fest.

Thanks again for your feedback and comments! As always, you can reach us at cheapdateshow@gmail.com or on our voice mail line at 206 203-3283.

Cheap Date - 24 November 2007 - I'll Have a Gumballhead, Please

Welcome to another action-packed episode of the Cheap Date show!

This week we review ToPa Tavern and Grill in Elk Grove Village, where Joe enjoyed a Gumballhead American Pale Wheat Ale and Lisa had the famous 312 Urban Wheat Ale. And we haven't even started on the food yet. Listen to the show for complete details!

We also spend some time gushing over this year's Beaujolais Nouveau from Duboeuf, which is as delightful as the years before. If only we could remember them, that is. And we give a nod to Cycles Gladiator for their Pinot Noir.

Also highly recommended is our visit to Opera in Focus, as featured on our other show, <ahref="http://www.discoverwoodfield.com">Discover Woodfield. This is truly a Chicago area treasure, so be sure to check it out!

We'd also like to welcome all our new subscribers who joined us through the Zune Marketplace. Let us know what you think of the show and what you'd like to hear!

Thanks for all your comments, and please keep them coming! You can e-mail us at cheapdateshow@gmail.com or leave us a voice mail at 206-203-3283. We love hearing from you!

"I Told Ev'ry Little Star" is by Linda Scott, as heard in the ultra-creepy David Lynch film Mulholland Drive.

Cheap Date - 27 October 2007 - I Make Lamb (Well, Not This Time)

Welcome to the latest episode of Cheap Date!

This time out, we visit Periyali Greek Taverna in Des Plaines for a wonderful family meal. We also spend some time talking about Halloween and lots of other stuff, too.

Here is the link to listener Chris' recap of his two weeks in Europe drinking LOTS of really good beer.

And here is listener Thelma's Orange Syrup recipe:

Orange syrup

1 can of frozen Orange juice (plastic can is microwaveable)

4 tablespoons Butter

Sugar

Water

Corn Starch

Put OJ and butter in saucepan over medium heat. Make sure to stir constantly. I don't have a specific amount of sugar because I just put some in, test it, a little more, test it, and so forth. I think the last time I did this I put 4 spoonfuls in. I also used Splenda the last time I did it, and it came out great. I put in about third of the OJ can filled with water to settle down the OJ taste, and add 1 spoon of cornstartch. Keep stirring it over the saucepan. This only takes a few minutes to take.

If you don't use it up, put it in a sealed jar and place in the fridge then when you need to use some just heat in the microwave and serve.

Other fun stuff mentioned: The Affy Tapple Factory Store, Oberweis Dairy, and the Arlington Heights Chamber of Commerce.

We'd also like to invite you to a live podcast by some wonderful Chicago podcasters at the Globe Pub, 1934 W Irving Park Rd, in Chicago. The hosts of The Brit and Yankee, ChicagoScope, Chicago Bites, and GamaSutra will all be there! Details on the flyer here!

Cheap Date - 18 August 2007 - A Cake of 1000 Leaves

A word of caution: this week's Cheap Date is not at all cheap.

We received a very generous wedding gift from a friend of ours, which led us to an incredible meal at Chicago's Les Nomades. We can't say enough wonderful things about this experience, so you'll have to listen to the show for all the details.

We received a lot of feedback on our "dip" question in our last show, and we share the results this time around. We also announce our creation of Lisa and Joe's Five Major Food Group Pentagram. Send in your votes today!

The show ran a bit long, so we saved some feedback and a guest review for the next time out.

Keep those comments coming! We love hearing from you. You can email us at dish@cheapdateshow.com, leave a message at 206 203-3283, or follow us on Twitter as 4thtime and jtl!

Cheap Date - 14 April 2007 - Double-Header

This episode was recorded in an undisclosed location, which explains the sound quality. Actually, it's coming to you from the hotel room where we spent our couple of homeless days while we awaited closing on our new house. No more Cheap Date condo! And yes, we're still in Arlington Heights.

This week's show is a double-header:

First, we visit Thai Little Home Cafe in their new home in Arlington Heights.

Then, we take you to Armand's Pizzeria in downtown Arlington Heights for some great Italian cuisine. Two home runs tonight!

Lisa shares her thoughts on being a vegetarian for the month of April. And she shares this awesome bean recipe: try it-- you'll thank her.

Thanks to everyone for the good wishes from our wedding! We appreciate all your wonderful congratulations and comments, and please keep them coming (the comments, not necessarily the congrats). You can leave a message at 206 203-3283 or send an email to dish@cheapdateshow.com.

Beer Nuts and 7-ounce pints of beer. It just doesn't get any better than this, pally.

We talk about our meetup with Matt and Amy and Charley and Carol at Joe's Bebop Cafe at Chicago's Navy Pier. A great time was had by all.

After filling up on jambalaya and whatnot, we headed up to Six Flags for Fright Fest. Ever do a 20-story drop straight down?

Tonight's Cheap Date takes us to El Molino in Carpentersville. Hot, spicy, and the home of Joe's hands-down favorite Mexican dish.

Cheap Date - 14 October 2006 - The Land of Beer and Cheese

Did someone say "ROAD TRIP??" This week, we're off to the city of Madison, Wisconsin to see what's going on up there.

Before we gas up and get on I-90, though, we tell you about the <http:></http:>Tim Tam Slams we tried with the biscuits/cookies from listener Rachael. The Slam was explained to us by listener John. We also tell you how you can try this at home. Thanks, guys!

We start out at the Dane County Farmer's Market where we bought great cheese and some awesome maple butter. And yes, there's an on-air taste test, complete with sticky fingers.

Then it's up the street to Ian's Pizza, where we had some wonderful and wacky pizza slices.

How to you top that? Beer, of course. We made our way through a marijuana-rights demonstration to the Wisconsin Union, where we enjoyed lots of cold beer at Der Stiftskeller.

But wait, there's more.

What follows beer? Tequila, of course. Dinner is at Casa de Lara, and it's something to behold.

And on the way home, it's that old interstate standby, Cracker Barrel.

It was a whirlwind, Ladies and Gents, but worth every moment.

Keep those comments, emails, voice mails, and special notes coming! You can leave a comment below or drop us a line at dish@cheapdateshow.com. You can also leave us a voice mail at 206 203-3283. We love hearing from you!

Cheap Date - 7 October 2006 - Under The Harvest Moon

Quick, look outside: when this show gets released, there will be a full moon in the sky. And as we sit under this bright October sky, we'll make you hungry.

We start with a bit;about the new Mario Batali line of cookware at Crate & Barrel, and then we go into the awesome pizza we made from C&B's crust mix and this delicious sauce.

Then it's down to Australia for some goodies from listener Rachael, our newest, bestest friend. Among the goodies in the box we have Arnotts Mint Slices, a veritable piece of Heaven on Earth. It's the Magic of Globalization. Thanks, Rachael!

It's a really Cheap Date this week, folks. We visit the erstwhile Rock 'n' Roll McDonald's in Chicago at the request of listener Ross, who was inspired to suggest it after being reminded of a song by Wesley Willis.

After a little engagement talk, we thank you guys for your votes for the Podcast Peers Award-- we won the "Cooking/Food/Wine/Beer" category. Thanks again!

Thanks to Daryl for calling us to the table tonight!

Our weekend in downtown Chicago turns out wonderfully in spite of the rain and post-wedding partygoers in the hallways in the middle of the night.

We started out at the Drake Hotel and then moved on to the Museum of Science and Industry. We followed that up with a trip to Navy Pier, and then it was back to the hotel to get ready for a not-at-all Cheap Date.

Dinner tonight is at mk, where we were very impressed with the decor as well as the food. Yeah, like very impressed.

Breakfast the next morning was at the Tempo Cafe where Joe enjoyed a very nice omelet and was reminded of the late, lamented Cambridge House.

Thanks to Charles for this week's call to the table, and to listener Brian for his guest review of Chef Paul's Bavarian Lodge!

This week's Cheap Date takes us to Johnny's Kitchen and Tap in Glenview, Illinois. Skirt steak, shrimp, salmon... mmm. (Oh, and Lisa's a naked steak liker.)

Cheap Date - 9 September 2006 - Got Anything More Upbeat?

Grab your putter, fire up the clay oven, bring up Lynx, and please keep your arms and legs in the car at all times. We cover a lot of ground on this episode of Cheap Date...

We recap our Labor Day tournament at Putting Edge Mini Golf in Hoffman Estates. Glow-in-the-dark madness, we tell ya-- once they turned off the sad cowboy music.

You'll also hear how Fall is Lisa's favorite season, then Joe launches into the lyrics of "Season Cycle" from XTC's Skylarking album. Lisa counters by quoting the socially significant, heartfelt, and soul-touching lyrics of Fergie's "London Bridge."

Our Cheap Date this week is the Indian/Nepalese lunch buffet at Mt Everest in Evanston. Let's sum it up by quoting Lisa: "Everything was my personal favorite."

For dessert (yeah, like we needed more food), we stopped at Homer's in Wilmette for some amazing ice cream. We also give you a little primer on mochi.

If you're hungry after this half hour, blame us.

Tonight's episode is fueled in part by Longbranch Bloody Mary Zinger and Ketel One.

Thanks to the devilishly talented Ross for calling us to the table tonight!

And finally: we got around to recording our promos! Look for them in the column on the right, click and listen, or right-click and save!

Thanks for all your comments and emails! If you'd like to call us to the table, send us a guest review, or just tell us about what's going in on your world, let us know! You can reach us at dish@cheapdateshow.com or you can leave a comment right here on the site if your more the exhibitionist-type.

What lurks in your genetic code? Joe thinks he's got yellow moons, pink hearts, orange stars, and green clovers. And Lisa laments the fact that one of her grade school projects has been rendered obsolete.

We talk about the National Geographic Society's Genographic Project, in which Joe and his sister are participating. In a few weeks, we'll see what Joe's DNA sample tells us. If you're interested in finding out about your ancient ancestors, join up!

A lunchtime Cheap Date takes us to Sopraffina in Chicago, where we enjoyed some delicious Italian market-style dining.

We followed that up (okay, a couple hours later) with a visit to Cereality, a cereal bar right next to the Monroe Street Bridge in downtown Chicago. Sugarbuzzsugarbuzzsugarbuzz.

Thanks to the lovely Karen for calling us to the table tonight!

Tonight's episode is fueled by a Fusee Merlot 2003. (Sorry, we can't put an accent egout in the name because the blogging software can't handle it.)

This episode's running time: 29:40.

Cheap Date - 19 August 2006 - Urban Eat Whale

This episode comes off like a well-boiled icicle. Well, maybe not quite as smoothly as that, but you get the idea.

Join us as we talk about the proper way to make popcorn in a hot air popper (and the crib we always pass on I-65), and whether or not Lisa is on a first-name basis with the Fire Department. Oh, and is Joe an Antichrist or Anarchist?

As we enjoy our Goose Island 312 Urban Wheat Ale, you'll also hear our take on Clerks 2.

Our Cheap Date this week is Finn McCool's in Schaumburg, Illinois. We were delighted, from the cheap beer to the cheap burger to the fried delight that came at the end of our meal. Listen to the show for full details. (Promised show link here.)

We also learned about a longtime Chicago restaurant tradition (That Steak Joynt), that's returning, presumably without the ghosts.

Send us your comments, great (and not so great) thoughts, or anything else that's on your mind! Add a comment here or send us an email at dish@cheapdateshow.com. We love hearing from you!

Cheap Date - 5 August 2006 - Summer Ice Cream Spectacular!

Subtitled: "Are you sure this is lowfat?"

It's dessert time, people. Today's edition of Cheap Date takes you to some our favorite ice cream spots in the Chicago area.

But first, a little fun from Steve and Dawn as they have a spot of trouble getting us to the table.

You'll hear our reviews of Oberweis Dairy, The Plush Horse, Julie Ann's Frozen Custard, The Glenview Dairy Bar (shown at right), and Capannari's Ice Cream. There's also a mention of the long lost Cock Robin.

Flavor. Texture. Frostiness. Rock. Paper. Scissors. The only thing missing is a huge stack of napkins.

Tell us about your favorite summer treats! Write to us at dish@cheapdateshow.com and let us know what your favorites are, or if you'd like to take a stab at calling us to the table (okay, maybe that's not the best choice of words)!

Cheap Date - 29 July 2006 - What's Your Beef?

Subtitled: "Who ate all the Smudlers Knechts Noen?"

This week's show begins with a reminiscence of Graham Kerr's Galloping Gourmet show, and a really unhealthy dish that looked pretty good on TV, actually.

We also talk about a strange little TV show called Nite-Owl and how Joe's foresight in the early 80s has made him a hero on YouTube here in the 21st Century.

Then it's off to Portillo's in Rolling Meadows for an awesome Italian Beef and a Jumbo Hot Dog. Add some fries and you've got a classic and delicious meal. Our intent is to make you hungry, so you've been warned.

We end this week's show with an invitation and a physics lesson.

Keep those notes, guest reviews, requests, recipes, and comments coming-- we really appreciate them! You can contact us at dish@cheapdateshow.com to let us know what's on your mind!

Cheap Date - 22 July 2006 - I'm Your Fan

I was born like this, I had no choice
I was born with the gift of a golden voice
And twenty-seven angels from the great beyond
They tied me to this table right here
In the tower of song

Join Lisa and Joe this week as we talk about the movie Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man, which we saw at Chicago's Music Box Theatre. Joe only hopes to be that cool when he's Leonard's age.

Then it's a short trip right next door to Cullen's Bar and Grill, where we had some great refreshments in a friendly atmosphere. Plenty of beer on tap and plenty of food on the plates! And not very far from The Friendly Confines, so if you need to have your heart busted all over the place, like the Cubs did to Steve Goodman, we've got you covered.

In the return of our Guest Review segment, Shelly takes us to The Fish Net Restaurant in Blue Hill, Maine. Our mouths started watering during the recording of this segment, so be warned.

We finish up the show by reading some listener mail and comments, including talk about one of the best movies ever made, the big festival in Lisa's home town, and the fact that Lisa is way cuter than Lala.

Thanks to everyone for the notes, guest reviews, and comments! Drop us a note at dish@cheapdateshow.com to submit your review or comments about anything you'd like to share!

Dinner tonight is at Pepe's Mexican Restaurant in Rolling Meadows, where we dined on a whole lotta carbs and a good couple of 'ritas. Oh, and there was some protein in there: that steak over there for example.

Cheap Date Video - 8 July 2006 - The Arlington Heights Song

Welcome to our very first videocast!

We're taking a little vacation this week, so we figured we'd break out the video camera, iMovie, and a song by local musician Roger Bain called, oddly enough, "The Arlington Heights Song." Yeah, it's an actual song, folks, and we felt it needed to be heard. We don't know why, but we did. :-)

The scenes were shot around downtown Arlington Heights this past week, and include appearances by Joe's daughters and Derek Hanley from Peggy Kinnane's. Neither of us are in this, but if things work out, you may get video of us in future. Oh, you lucky people.

We hope you enjoy this little experiment of ours, and after viewing this show, head on over to The Big Show to hear Joe's visit with the delightful Aaron and Jenny.

As always, we'd love to hear from you! Write to us at dish@cheapdateshow.comand tell us what's going on in your world! If you're interested in calling us to the table on a future episode, let us know!

We take Cheap Date on the road this week as we visit historic Galena, Illinois!

Join us as we kick back and visit the Hawk Valley Retreat, a Bed and Breakfast just outside Galena. Using our wizardry and incredibly high production values, you'll feel like you're right there with us.

You'll also hear about two of the restaurants we visited, The Market House Tavern and Restaurant and Fried Green Tomatoes. Yum.

We also cover the wonderment of simple syrup (or surrrup, as Lisa says) and how it can help you make some kick-butt drinks.

Happy July 4th, everyone! (And it's worth mentioning that July 4th is Lisa's birthday, too...)

We call it prosciutto, you can call it tasty. It's another Cheap Date with Lisa and Joe!

Rather than getting in the car, we decide to head through the woods on our bikes and pick up a takeout order from Maggiano's Little Italy. That's a nice combination: 6 miles on a bike followed by a whole lotta garlic, onion, lettuce.. mmmmmm.

There's also a great debate about whether we want the government in our, um, lunchrooms telling us we can't eat Fluffernutters. Check it out.

Thanks to Daryl for calling us to the table this week!

Decked out in our lederhosen, we bring you another fabulous Cheap Date!

Tonight we visit The Chicago Brauhaus in Lincoln Square. If you can get past our pedestrian German skills, you'll enjoy hearing about this classic treffpunkt where there's lots of good food to be had. The title of this week's show comes from what Becky calls the place-- We guess "Brauhaus" is tough to remember when you're 14. :-)

You'll also hear about what we find fascinating at IKEA-- and some of our favorite words, including Kraftwerkian, zufahrt, and Kinder Egg. Joe tells the tale of his evening at an Apple Wine Restaurant in Frankfurt and the interesting characters he met.
And Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there!

There's also talk about ancient Kool-Aid, frosting cookies, silent movies, and Joe's recent "appearance" on the Macworld Podcast.

Cheap Date - 27 May 2006 - Bom Apetite!

Clean off the chargers and brush up on your Portuguese, ladies and gents... it's a Brazilian feast!

We was learned stuff this week about table settings, and we share it with you 'cause we want you to be learned stuff, too. This segment contains an obligatory Bob (sans Liz) mention, right alongside talk of Kate Beckinsale and Kofi Annan.

Then it's off to the fun stuff: a Sunday afternoon dinner at Sinha's Home in Chicago, the headquarters of Sinha Elegant Cuisine. Folks, the only word for this meal is awesome. If you love or are interested in authentic Brazilian cuisine, check them out-- we're serious about this.

You'll also hear about the Gingarte Capoeira School, who entertained us with a demo of their mad capoeira skills. They're the ones in the photo here, and yes, they were doing handstands and headspins right on the asphalt. If you've never seen this martial art in action, check out this link to a capoeira school in Toronto.

Our Side Trip takes us to Tuscan Market in Arlington Heights where we got some soft-shell crabs to enjoy with our Banrock Station White Shiraz. Yummo.

Kick back, pour some guarana or make yourself a caipirinha and enjoy the Memorial Day weekend! (And if you're in Chicago, make sure to do Bike The Drive!)

Thanks to Becky for calling us to the table this week!

What starts out as lunch at Jimmy John's takes a turn into a discussion on the difference between tip cups and "take a penny" cups. Then we start in on tipping in general. And it gets political.

Then we leave Chicago and take you to the Madison, Wisconsin area for a visit to Captain Bill's Restaurant, where we celebrated Lisa's brother's graduation from law school with a great dinner and a bottle of 1990 Dom Perignon.

Fueled only by half a blueberry muffin, we start today's show by taking you through Lisa's wacky family, who can't seem to eat the whole thing. You'll learn about all sorts of things that can be cleft in twain, and then it'll be time to hear about our mad angel food cake-making skills and the proper use of cerveza. Or at least how a botella de cerveza figures into the creation of a great angel food cake.

We'll take you on a brief trip to the Julius Meinl Cafe on Chicago's North Side, and then complete the deal with a delicious stop at White Palace Grill just south of downtown Chicago.

On our way to see the Evolving Planet exhibit at Chicago's Field Museum, we stop for breakfast at Corner Bakery.
Cheap Date - 22 April 2006 - Live from Chef's Fest

Subtitled: "How did we miss the Meat Sticks?"

For Cheap Date's very first live remote, we visit the Arlington International Racecourse for Chef's Fest 2006. And coming along for the ride are our good pals Liz and Bob.

The idea behind Chef's Fest is to give local restaurants and hotels the opportunity to put on their best for the general public. This year, there were about 100 exhibitors offering everything from plum wine to marshmallow fondue to, yes, meat sticks. For a $30 admission fee, visitors got to sample as much food from as many places as they could squeeze in (sorry for the pun).

Some of the places we mention are:

Bonefish

Weber Grill

Emmett's

Texas de Brazil

Durty Nellie's

Ram

Wildfire

Mitsuwa Market

Peggy Kinnane's

Qdoba

Rainforest Cafe

Pappadeaux

Costco

Dave and Buster's

IKEA

Brookfield Zoo

Bennigan's

Harper College

Tony and Tina's Wedding

Jelly Belly

Metropolis Ballroom

Arlington Heights Sheraton

Glunz Family Winery

Lynfred Winery

We talk to several passers-by who seem more amazed at four people sitting at a white resin table with microphones than with the food itself. A baguette gets broken, a fire department commander shows how they talk down at the station, and Bob regales us with the tale of The Sandwich in One Bite Guy.

Some quick technical notes about the show: the room was very noisy, so we found ourselves speaking louder than usual, and as a result there's some distorted audio: we did our best to clean it up, though. Also, our vocals are in mono because we mixed it down that way-- the original stereo recording is awesome because of the way the crowd sounds in the background, but our voices wound up in different channels so it sounded like the audio equivalent of a tennis match. We may post a few minutes of the original mix so you can experience the effect. It'll be kinda like hearing Sgt. Pepper's for the first time. :-)

Write to us! We'd love to hear about your dining experiences, good or bad; and we appreciate your comments! You can reach us at dish@cheapdateshow.com or you can leave a comment right here on the blog.

Cheap Date - 1 April 2006 - Stairway to Superdawg!

Things start out in the usual way, but then a couple of little April Fools take over and bring us to Superdawg on Chicago's Far Northwest Side.

We also discuss the wonderment of Kosher Coca-Cola and why it beats the pants off the regular stuff... and we do an on-air taste test to prove it. Joe also has an idea for a sure moneymaker for the Coca-Cola Company.

The 80s are back thanks to the movie Urgh! Lisa swoons because she got to see REM's Michael Stipe singing "Moon River."

The show ends with a lovely lullaby Joe used to sing to his kids.

Thanks to our maitre d' this week, Jeff!
